Short Cuts

He looked constantly for shortcuts,
But the shortcuts were not there,
The roads were long and winding
Nestled layer upon layer.
He thought that round each corner,
He would see ways to cut through,
To come closer to an ending
To see where he’d headed too.
Each time he tried to shortcut,
It would set him back a touch
And although each not-quite-shortcut
Set him backwards not too much,
It soon became apparent
That in trying every day
To discover quicker cut throughs
That he walked a longer way.
