Becoming You

Each day you are a bit more you,
And do things that you want to do,
No longer shackled by Mum’s ties,
As you grow, so you realise,
That you are you, right through and through,
I cannot tell you what to do,
I cannot tell you how to be
Or what to think
Of what you see;
I cannot tell you how to feel
Or things you feel would not be real.
It’s hard at first,
So used are we
To you reflecting parts of me,
But as you grow and as you change,
Although it all feels somewhat strange,
I love the child that you become,
You make me proud to be your Mum.
