Let Down Your Guard

Let down you guard,
They said,
And speak.
Did they not know
How hard I worked
To build that dam
And make it watertight?
To bury thoughts and feelings,
And memories too hard to face?
That letting down my guard
Would lead to poison oozing in
And drowning in a painful dark?
But,
they said,
If not let down,
This guard,
This dam,
Will surely someday burst..

Love the analogy with a dam rather than a wall which of course would not burst but wouldn’t get bigger either.

Yes I know this too. But it’s back there somewhere and I’m in a place where letting the trickles out is regularly manageable.
