Aching to Be Mum

There was pleasure,
But also pain as well,
In watching her sister’s
Belly swell.
The new life promised
Fun and joy;
A long awaited little boy.
A boy to bring their smiles back,
To lift their moods from cold and black.
But in him she would see another,
The baby that she could not mother
Because he came too soon,
Too small
There was nothing they could do at all.
His cousin, she would love, for sure
But she knew she wanted more
To be a mum as well as aunt,
But when things hurt so much
You can’t…
In time, perhaps.
A day would come,
When little lips
Would whisper ‘Mum’
