A Thousand Angry Voices

Never alone,
The chatter of a thousand voices followed him.
Voices with messages that must be heard.
Never messages of hope or faith.
Never kindness or joy.
No encouragement,
Nor smiles hidden behind crinkled eyes.
Hate.
Anger.
Criticism.
Dissent.
Louder and LOUDER.
In an empty room.
He could not hear their words.
So many voices all at once;
An angry hum,
Words indistinct.
So each called louder;
Catcalling its message until it was not heard, but felt
Deep within his body.
His bones grew heavy
With anger, guilt shame and disappointment.
A thousand angry voices,
In a silent room.
