Intrusive Thoughts [sonnet]

The ebb and flow of thoughts became too much.
His mind was never empty for a day,
He wondered would this always be the way?
Would he forever fear the things he touched?

He didn’t know but hoped that things could change,
He tried so hard to calm the inner words,
But he could not forget them once he’d heard…
The things that they demanded were deranged.

And yet he found that he would be compelled
To follow through on what the voices said
A part of him knew they were in his head
A part of him was transfixed by their spell

It didn’t make him happy but he knew,
For now he must do what they told him to.
