Stage Fright

Five hundred pairs of eyes watched him
As he took to the stage.
He walked, self-assured
Head held high,
Eyes looking to the sky.
When he spoke
Five hundred pairs of ears listened to him.
They heard
Every word,
They hung on every syllable.
Enraptured and engrossed.
He could not look more confident.
As he finished speaking
The applause was spontaneous,
Rapturous
And LOUD,
Drowned out only
By the sound of blood
Pumping in his ears.
As he masked his fears.
He thanked his audience,
Turned,
And purposefully
Strode from the stage,
And only then
Did he remove his mask.
