The Voice of Hate

Each day was punctuated
By the voice of hate.
Self-hate.
A voice so loud,
He could hear little else.
Ever critical,
Unresting,
Demanding
And scornful
The voice was not quiet
For even a moment.
He tried to please the voice,
But the voice was never pleased.
Goalposts moved,
Old goals mocked,
And he found himself again,
And again,
And again,
Locked in a cycle of self hate.
The only party to a voice
No one else would understand.
And he hated it,
As much as it hated him.
And yet,
He listened…
