It should make him feel lucky,
Being singled out
For such special attention.
They spent hours each day,
Sending him messages,
Talking about him,
They made sure he was never alone,
That his every thought
Was amplified.
He could not speak
Without being heard,
And responded to.
Some were less fortunate,
He supposed.
He was not ignored;
Was it wrong that he wished he was?
That he wished he had one less bruise
To evidence his standing as the ‘special one’?
One less emotional scar resulting
From his ‘unique talents’?
He didn’t feel lucky.
Not at all.
He hoped they would end it
Before he did.

In these cases it is sad that the worm turns so seldom – the puny can triumph, given enough ruthless resolution!
