Before and After

She carried herself
Like a woman of ninety.
Her twenty years weighed heavy.
Feet dragging,
Shoulders slumped;
Each breath out
A deep, forlorn sounding sigh.
She had been young
And carefree,
Full of energy and promise,
Just days ago,
Before…
But she could not think of before.
Only of now;
A new reality.
She plodded on,
Shoulders slumped
Sighing deeply
Preparing for another day.
