Break Up

Frost creeps up on their relationship.
Only the astute can see;
The forced holding of hands,
And laughs not meant.
A frosty undercurrent,
Colder thoughts each day.
The pretence can only last so long,
The cracks run too deep.
Eventually they plummet into icy waters,
Taking their children
And elderly dog with them.
Teeth chattering,
Hearts broken.

  3. Oooh, I see this with a couple I know, and you’ve crystallised it for me. There was never even any holding of the hands!
