I don’t want to light a candle,
To remember you,
My friend,
I would rather buy you coffee,
Head out shopping,
Spend and spend!
I would rather do most anything,
Than have to say goodbye,
But I’m absolutely terrified,
You’re just about to die.
You think life’s not worth living,
That you don’t deserve a chance,
To enjoy life and to have friends,
And to sing, perhaps to dance.
But we all think you’re amazing,
You’re a very special friend,
You make us smile,
You care for us,
We don’t want that to end.
We really want to help you,
But we’re scared and don’t know how;
If you can think of anything,
We’ll be there, we’ll do it now.
I hope you find it in you,
To kick the butt of this disease.
Anorexia, I hate you,
Aoife – no more candles,
Please…
[Each of these candles represents a life lost to anorexia. They formed part of a service of remembrance at Norwich Cathedral organised by Beat, the eating disorders charity, this week].

Such a heartbreaking poem of reality we hear of too much, I always feel helpless hearing a youth call about this…drowning in this insipid, cruel disease…so misunderstood. May I reblog this to my Stop the Stigma blog?

Yes of course, I love it when people like my words enough to want to share them.
That must be very hard to hear. I work in the field and can advise on how to manage these situations, but when it’s real life and your own friend it is somehow very, very different. Aoife now how this poem stuck on her wall. I hope it helps her fight a little bit x

Absolutely understand what you mean. I feel worthless with family if they need support…as a mom/relative I can but can’t be a counsellor to people close. thanks for allowing me to reblog.

Many friends and family suffer seeing a loved won battle the disease of disordered eating. know that it is their powerlessness that may make them withdraw at times, but never for the lack of love and concern for you.

Very poignant…..the only person I ever knew that struggled with anorexia (at least obviously by that point) did die. Your words describe the feelings very bluntly but eloquently.

Beautifully written. This poem hits close to home for me. I am the one suffering from this terrible disease, only I can’t talk about it on my blog because my mom, and 2 daughters follow me on my blog, so I can only talk about this matter on others blogs. Thanks for sharing. This sent a shiver up my spine. I currently have a feeding tube, and continue to lose weight. I am in extensive outpatient therapy, I go 3 times a week. It started in childhood and followed me all the way into adulthood. I hope one day I can win this battle.

You won because you wanted to and you fought hard to get to where you are today. I’m very happy for you and I hope one day, I can do the same, before it’s too late. Stay strong and keep fighting. You got this. You’re an inspiration to me. I’ll be back later to read some more. Take care. XXX

To a wonderful young lady and friend Pooky,
You wrote me this poem,on October 24th last year during maybe the most difficult scariest of times…I don’t think I read until months later but I wanted to find it again tonight and post this poem, your words to me,back to YOU…I don’t really think you understand what a difference you make to so many people,on so many levels, you are a mother,a wife,a poet,a writer,an author,a professional,an inspiration,a fighter and a friend…NOTHING changes those FACTS ❤ Nothing x Love always, Aoifs xxx

Just caught this on my random Pooky Poems read. It says so much about you Pooky, your care your love and your desire to help. This very personal poem is just stunning and Aoifs reply brought real tears. Years have gone by and I know how you are succeeding in your fight, I hope she is too.
