Four Years Ago

[A poem for Ellie on the 4th anniversary since she joined our family aged 6 months]

Four years ago,
You were someone else’s child.
Entrusted to our care.
You didn’t know us.
We didn’t know you.
Four years ago.

Four years ago,
We tended to your needs,
We fed you, we bathed you,
And in time,
We loved you.
Four years ago.

Four years ago,
We tried to treat you equally,
We worried and we fretted
And we hoped
Folk would accept you.
Four years ago.

Four years on,
And now we’ve got to know you,
We love you
And we cherish you,
And so does everyone.
Four years on.
