Poetry Prompt 63 – One word per line

write a poem which has only one word per line

Today’s prompt is to write a poem which has only one word per line (this is a specialism of WBdeeJay who inspired this prompt)

You might like to consider:

  • What should form the topic of your poem?
  • Should the words be connected to form sentences or stand alone?
  • Can punctuation help you convey meaning?

Happy reading, happy writing -and if you do write, don’t forget to post your poem (in full or as a link) in the comments below so we can all enjoy it.

At first I didn’t think I would do this prompt (I’ve never really done one like this before), but then I saw my inspiration.

I was curious about how common this technique is. So last night after some googling I came up with this blog post:
    http://stevenfama.blogspot.com.au/2010/04/reading-part-2-collected-poems-of-larry.html
Larry Eigner, a poet since the 1950’s wrote 43 one-word-per-line poems between the years of 1971 and 1992. Some a mere 2 words, the longest 18. It made for an interesting read, given that I’ve never been much into poetic history. I suppose we just didn’t delve into what interested me during school studies.
Admittedly my google-fu is merely average, so others may find out more on this technique.
