Chink of Light

Life was getting darker,
Feeling bleaker by the day.
He couldn’t really manage,
He had truly lost his way.
He thought he’d like to end it all,
Make the pain all go away.
He couldn’t face the darkness,
Of another failed day.
Then a friend came up and asked him
How are things, are you okay?
And he nearly didn’t answer,
But his mood began to sway.
He saw the smallest chink of light,
He saw it in the way,
That his friend had held her hand out,
As she asked about his day.
He heard it in the way she clearly meant
Are you okay?
Not another platitude,
Not something just to say.
He could tell she really meant it,
So he found the guts to say:
Thanks so much for asking,
But in fact, I’m not okay.
She listened and she held him,
On this dark and failing day.
And as he poured his heart out
He found his problems didn’t weigh
Quite so heavy on his heart now
And he thought he saw a way
That he could make it to the end
Of this most dark and dismal day.

Thank you for your kind words and for reblogging this. This one seemed to hit home with a few people. I hope that just one or two people will read it and be inspired to reach out to a friend…

This is so true, so sad (for those who haven’t been as fortunate) and so well written! Pooky, you are a star!

Thank you CC (sorry for the very slow turn around on comments, I’ve been so busy! Only time to post and run but so much of the fun lies in the comments so it makes me a little sad).

Thank you – I hope that it will stick with one or two people and encourage them to talk to friends in need. We’re often too scared to but a listening ear and an open heart can make all the difference in the world to a friend who needs us xx

Such is the moment that makes a difference in someone’s life. Captured into poem so beautifully. I don’t recall ever responding quite so consciously as described here, but rather responded unconsciously to the feeling behind the question.

Yes, I’m not sure if anyone really does at the time, though sometimes when we look back we can spot the aha moments even if they passed us by at the time! Thanks for your kind words, I was quite pleased to write a slightly more positive poem. All I seem to want to write about it death right now.
