Remembering or Reimagining?

Do you trust your own memory?
Does it tell you the truth?
Or do you sometimes ask questions
And look for more proof?
Remembering feels like
Watching a video play,
But in fact our mind
Often decides its own way,
To retell us these stories,
Of which we feel so sure,
To excite us, protect us
Or provide us a cure,
For the things that could hurt us
If not locked away,
And so it seems often
Our memories stray,
And like artists with brushes,
We paint not what we see,
But reimagine the scene,
As we’d like it to be.

So much of my life feels like a story someone told me. Even as recent as last summer or living in Kenya doesn’t feel like I was even there. I think for me it’s probably because I’ve spent so long struggling with even surviving that being able to really notice real life was impossible. It’s still this way today, I hate it.

I’ll consider my thoughts prodded with a beautiful flower!
I suspect my memories are coloured by the emotions at the time, so any neutral interpretation is difficult.
