I watched today
As my children shared a moment of pure joy.
A moment without Mum, or Dad,
A moment just for them.
They’re growing now,
Both in stature and in personality.
And so the transition begins.
Once,
Both girls could do nothing without me,
Without us,
Without help.
Back then, a yearning,
A need to be free,
A feeling that my children were imprisoning me.
With love.
Now,
The girls can do anything without me,
Without us,
Without help.
And now, a yearning,
A need to be needed,
A feeling that my children are finding their own way.
With love.
I’m proud as I watch them,
Safe and secure,
Unafraid to laugh,
To cry,
To fail,
To try,
Anchored by love,
And also freed by it.

Beautiful, Pooky, and so is your photo! Your words and feelings remind me of several poems I wrote when our children were little, too. Oh, the phases we go through. 🙂

I would love to read those poems…. Parenting is the most exciting and wonderful and terrifying journey I’ve ever embarked upon.

A beautiful poem indeed! As is the title, those feelings come through this piece, as well as a little nervousness, but always – anchored by love. What a great way to be, I trust you will be be in that place often.
By the way, not rhyming? Well you nailed it!

Thank you Peter… Nervousness… hell yeah. Every day. I hope I can be the Mum my kids need me to be, but I’ll always do my best, and boy do they make me proud!

Lovely Pooky, a a parent you are seeing the constant changes happening to your children, and the amazing people they are growing into. They will do things that will surprise you as they get older if my experience of children is anything to go by. Enjoy the ride. Great poem by the way.

Beautiful Pooky. I love that feeling too, of watching my two girls interact without me. I randomly created them, and now they are together, by choice. They have just gone on a sister road trip and are sending me photos. 🙂

Oh wow! That sounds fantastic… A sister is the most precious friend you could hope for. My sister and I weren’t close until our late teens when we traveled around Indonesia together, that was a really special trip and she’s now one of my most trusted friends.

This is delicious Pooky. And these feelings form the circle game for each new parent generation. Lovely. I love the way you have veered away from rhyme; youve done it well in my opinion. Xx

Thank you Christine, I worry I will bore people constantly harping on about my babies but they are the thing that fill my life with more emotions than anything else right now.

Pooky, what a perfect poem! Rich yet sparse, honing in on the heart. I’ve read it aloud several times and I weep at the beauty and truth of it. I just want to give you a great big hug. You are such a gifted poet.

Thank you. I wish you could meet my girls. You’d adore them. That said, you are probably one of the growing contingent of people who feel like they do see them often because of the joy of Facebook. I stopped sharing so many of my girls’ moments for a while as I feared I’d become a baby bore, but I got many complaints so now I indulge myself as often as I like 🙂
Incidentally, I adored the photo of you and Ken when he was one. What a precious moment. Do you have one of the three of you?
