Giving Blood, Giving Life

Giving blood’s a selfless act,
You give your blood,
Get nothing back.
Except, of course,
That’s quite untrue.
Donating blood
Does lots for you.
It makes you feel
Warm inside,
And justly filled
With righteous pride.
You think of where
Your blood will go,
And get great pleasure
As it flows
Out of your arm,
For others’ use.
It’s beautiful
Life-giving juice.
It’s not a lot
To give away
But might help someone
Live a day
They wouldn’t have
Seen otherwise,
Or your might save
A mother’s cries
As she rocks
A child who’s sick
Saved by
‘Just a little prick’
And half an hour
Of your day
Spent in the most
Rewarding way.

As you may have guessed, today’s poem was penned whilst donating blood. If you’ve never given blood before I’d urge you to consider it – it’s quick and easy. You can find out more here on the following pages:

I donate on a regular basis. I have given 58 gallons worth. We have one guy who donates where I do that has 140 gallons. OMG….!

I loved the pace of this Pooky, it rocked along in rigid time like a march!
A great message to spread indeed. I have donated a couple of times, unfortunately often ineligible due to medication or health situation.

It was my sixth donation though I’m somewhat regretting it now as I hadn’t really thought about the fact I’m now about a half stone below the lower weight limit and have realised it’s maybe there for a reason as 48 hours on and I’m still getting massive dizzy spells. Ooops!

I wasn’t able to donate for years due to weight and various other issues so try to as often as I can now. My mum had a transfusion once so I always feel like I want to give that blood back. It’s great that you’ve donated at all, even if you can’t now. Most people never do…

Donating is always on my mind, there are radio ads regularly. As soon as I am able I will again. Great that you have a personal reason to keep at it, but watch those limits. x

Indeed – Tom was saying that in the US you can be paid to donate. I wonder how much difference that makes to donation rates? (and people pushing the limits unwisely?)

  6. I’ve been on the receiving end, and a precious little boy named, Caemon, needed lots of blood. I’m so pleased you’ve put the various country contacts at the end. It’s just so very important.
I’m sure you won’t mind if I share in memory of Caemon. x

I’m one of Caemon’s moms. Our boy had over a hundred units of platelets and over fifty units of whole blood while he underwent treatment. Children with leukemia (and of course adults too) need these life-saving, life-prolonging donations to make it through their treatments. We are so grateful to the countless strangers who gave blood for our son and for all of those who continue to give blood and blood products. Thank you for writing this, and thank you so much for saving lives. What a gift you are giving. ❤

I don’t have any words but I am deeply touched that you’ve taken a moment to respond here and I hope with every ounce of my soul that you have a million happy memories of Caemon. xxxxx
